Faculty Mission
The Faculty of Architecture offers a learning
environment with a contemporary approach to education
for young people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
The aim is to provide opportunities for future
architects to be equipped with necessary knowledge and
skills to cope with rapid global changes, to react
rationally as well as creatively to contemporary issues
in architecture, its problems and challenges, within an
interdisciplinary approach to education through its
distinguished academic infrastructure. The graduates are
expected to contribute to the improvement of quality of
life as dynamic individuals with a high sense of
responsibility and leadership, capable of assuming
central roles in teamwork - a global reality of our day.
They are to be equipped not only with designing and
decision making abilities but also with the
implementation of project management functions .
The four-year integrative curriculum which has been
prepared to fulfill this mission provides the
opportunity for students to acquire the background
needed towards a creative and fruitful career. It is
frequently revised and updated to keep abreast of the
latest developments.
The main focus of the educational approach is on the
architectural design studio supported by professional
theory courses and first year service courses. The
interactive studio, as the proper arena for critical
thinking, provides a milieu for addressing social,
technical and environmental issues around an
architectural project, through the re-creation and
discussion of the spatial dimension of the built
environment. The curriculum is flexible in that it
offers students the chance to take elective courses from
other departments or faculties to support an
interdisciplinary approach.
Faculty Facilities
EMU's Main Library houses a wide collection of books and
periodicals related to art and architecture. The
Department also maintains a special reading room,
offering a wide range of valuable architectural
periodicals and books to students. Modern studios
provide a perfect milieu for exchange of ideas and
individual areas for students to work on their projects.
In addition to the two well-equipped CAD labs, there are
materials; environmental control system; model making
and photography laboratories at the disposal of the
students. Additionally, a Design and Research Center ,
an Urban Research and Development Center and a Building
Research Center are among the educational facilities
widely used by the students.
Distinguishing Attributes
The Faculty of Architecture is one of the largest
departments at Eastern Mediterranean University with
nearly 500 students and has some of the best educational
facilities among the architecture departments in the
region. With increasing demand for enrollment from
Turkey and the third world countries, the student body
in the Faculty is increasing in number, but a
one-to-one relationship between the student and the
instructors in design studios is still sustained in a
democratic milieu of education where free discussions
and creativity are valued. Additional academic and
social activities in the Faculty such as conferences,
symposia, exhibitions contribute to the educational
discourse. Occasionally, scholars from various countries
such as Turkey , Spain , England , etc. are invited to
conduct seminars or workshops.
Implementation-oriented work in the Design and Research
Center provides possibilities for future architects to
face the realities of professional life.
The graduate and undergraduate programs offered in the
Faculty are all accredited by YÖK (Higher Education
Council of Turkey).
Quality of Graduates
Graduates of the Department will have the advantage of
being the alumni of a Faculty which is a full member of
EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education),
an academic organization consisting mainly of
institutions in the European Union member states. They
will have a wider choice of professional prospects in
global scale. A number of our graduates who pursue
academic careers already find opportunities in European,
American, Cyprus and Turkish universities.
Job Opportunities
Graduates of the Faculty of Architecture find
opportunities for work in public or private
institutions, or work as freelance architects. Some get
into the type of work concerning a wide range of
functions from designing shop-windows or fair stands, to
more implementation-oriented work in construction firms.
Others take up post-graduate studies either at EMU and
universities in Turkey , or other universities in Europe
or the US and pursue academic work successfully. |
